Our Work
What we do
"Our purpose is to be a leading, independent, community-driven organisation in the Canberra region, which provides safe and innovative services and support for men, and promotes men's health and well-being, in partnership with other men and other organisations in the ACT".
(Strategic Directions June 1999)
Canberra Men's Centre is a down-to-earth, men-friendly community service working with the broad-ranging interests of men living in the ACT and the region. We have a fundamental commitment to social change through helping men to find new ways of leading positive and fulfilling lives, and, in so doing, become active in the building of a strong and caring community. We are committed to men as our primary target group, and our existing services have developed in response to this commitment.
Canberra Men's Centre has a very different outlook to agencies which 'happen' to have men as clients, as our primary purpose, to work with men, requires us to develop a 'men's issues' perspective across the whole of our agency. We believe that a men's service which is sensitive to gender issues and provides an independent, friendly environment, has good prospects for engaging men who sometimes have a challenging capacity for finding reasons to resist accessing other services.
Acknowledging men as fathers, sons and brothers, as well as partners, friends and workmates, we support the place of men in the lives of their children, and the place of children in the lives of their fathers. At the same time, we have a responsibility to the vulnerable and at risk, and so we fully support ACT initiatives to reduce the incidence of child abuse and domestic violence, and strive to take a positive role in helping men to take responsibility for their actions and make lasting and meaningful changes in these areas of their lives. To this end, we are also committed to building linkages with other community services, especially in the women's sector, and accept the mutual obligations this commitment requires.
